Red Hook Open Studios Update
Many of you may have heard about the recent fire in a Red Hook artist warehouse. The blaze was in the building right next to mine, and heartbreakingly, many artists, artisans, and local businesses lost a lifetime of work.
In the midst of this loss, the Red Hook Open Studios community has chosen to move forward with its ten-year anniversary event next weekend, October 11–12, as a show of resilience and solidarity. There will also be ongoing efforts around the neighborhood to help rebuild and support those affected.
If you’d like to contribute, please visit the Red Hook Fire Assist GoFundMe and Red Hook Business Alliance.pages for information on how to help.
During Red Hook Open Studios , I’ll be quietly opening the Hofmann Art Estate collection which I manage from 461 Van Brunt Street, Door 14 (ground floor I feel profoundly grateful that the space was spared, and hope it can offer a moment to reflect on both the outlandish creativity and the profound losses of the 1980s East Village art scene during the AIDS crisis.
Maps of all participating studios will be available at Food Bazaar at the end of Van Brunt.
With respect and solidarity,
